Beef and broccoli is a classic Chinese-American dish that is easy to make at home. It is typically made with thinly sliced beef that is stir-fried with broccoli florets and a savoury sauce.
Beef and broccoli
When we were young my mom used to make Chinese food very often. They had lived in Hong Kong for many years and so she picked the cuisine really well. This is her recipe and her technique that she taught me. It has never failed me and I’m sure you’ll love it too once you try it.
Ingredients
For the marinade
- 1 lb thinly sliced beef
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp ginger paste
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- Chili garlic to taste
- 1 tbsp hoisen sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 2-3 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp dark soy sauce
For the sauce
- 2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
- 1 tsp dark soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sugar
- White pepper to taste
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- Chili garlic to taste
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 3/4 cup hot water
Instructions
- In a bowl add all the marinade ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate overnight. Take it out an hour before and let the beef come to room temperature.
- Take all the sauce ingredients and mix well and set aside.
- Steam your broccoli till the color is bright green. This should only take a few minutes. Immediately take it out and shock the broccoli in ice water. This will help keep that vibrant green colour.
- Heat 2 tbsp oil and 2 tsp sesame oil in a wok and when it’s hot add the beef. Cook till almost done. The beef should be nicely browned. Pour in the sauce and mix well.
- Now toss in the broccoli florets.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and top with toasted sesame seeds
- Serve with steamed rice and enjoy.
