Beef and Broccoli

361

My love for Chinese takeout knows no bounds! I love every single thing about it except the fact that the halal takeout place is quite far from me and that take out all the time is not the healthiest option!

I have perfected this beef and broccoli recipe so that it tastes just like the takeout version, only better and far healthier. Share your thoughts with me when you make it. I love hearing from you.

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp chili oil (or to taste)

For the sauce:

  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp veggie bullion paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • White pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chili garlic oil (or totaste)

The rest of the ingredients:

  • 1 head of broccoli florets
  • 4 cloves of crushed garlic
  • 1 finger of ginger thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp non alcoholic mirin
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 small bunch scallions cut on a bias
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

Method:

  • In a bowl put the sliced beef and all the beef marinade ingredients.  Mix well and let it marinate for at least an hour. This step is vital to tenderizing your beef.  While the beef is marinating make the sauce. To make the sauce, you need to mix all the sauce ingredients really well and set aside.
  • Steam the broccoli and instantly shock it in ice water. This will preserve the vibrant green color. Set aside.
  • Now heat your wok and add about 2-3 tablespoons of any neutral oil. Dear the beef till brown on both sides. Remove and set aside
  • In the same wok, add your ginger and garlic and let it get fragrant. This should take just a couple of minutes at most. Now add the mirin and sauté. At this point add the sauce and deglaze the wok. Cook the sauce stirring frequently. Make a cornstarch slurry with the cornstarch and water. Pour the slurry into the sauce and stir fast and well. It will get thicker. Finally you will toss in the beef and broccoli and stir well. Garnish with scallions and sesame seeds. Enjoy with steamed rice
